Rupert the Drum Dog is always around for cuddles (don’t worry, he’s 100% hypoallergenic, but 1000% ready to judge your timekeeping skills).

We avoid dry syllabus music unless you really want to. At Midlands Drum School, you pick the tunes, we teach you how to smash them. Learn to drum to music you actually listen to — because your playlist > exam board playlists.
MDS LEVELS
MDS Levels are our answer to boring, box-ticking drum exams. With 8 exciting stages, you’ll learn one epic track you actually love — plus essential rudiments to unlock real creativity around the kit (no robotic drills here).
THE BEST PRACTICE FEEDBACK
We’ll keep you (and your child) in the loop with clear feedback and bite-sized practice goals. We'll even send you practice videos so you'll find it easier to digest what you need to do. We upload everything you need to your very own Google Drive too - no searching for sheet music.
IMPROVISATION
Most music schools focus purely on learning set pieces — and while that’s useful, we think great drummers need more. Our students learn to hear a song they’ve never played before and jam along like they’ve known it for years. We still teach reading, but we give improvisation the spotlight it deserves — because real musicians don’t just play the notes, they play the moment.
VISIBLE PROGRESS
With our MDS Levels, you’ll be hitting real milestones every month — no stress, just solid progress. Oh, and did we mention the rockstar treatment? We’ll record you tearing it up on your favourite track, complete with pro audio and slick video. Basically, your own mini music video to show-off your progress.

Why I Teach Drums
(And Why You’ll Love It)
Hey, I’m Alisdair – drummer, teacher, and founder of Midlands Drum School. I’ve been hitting things (musically) for over 15 years, recording with bands around the world, with tunes on Universal and BBC Radio.
Lessons happen in the Drum Cubby – my cosy home studio – where creativity flows, and Rupert the dog occasionally steals the show.
Drumming’s not just the most fun instrument to learn (though it is). It boosts confidence, focus, coordination – basically therapy with cymbals.
After teaching in loads of schools in the Midlands, I noticed most drum lessons rely on old-school grade systems that suck the joy out of playing. Out-of-date songs and drills from a 1930s military manual? Hard pass.
So I created MDS Levels – a fun, modern alternative that puts real music and creativity first. You'll learn to play to music that you love in the very first (free) lesson.
