Why I Teach Drums
(And Why You’ll Love It)
Hi, I’m Alisdair — drummer, teacher, and founder of
Midlands Drum School.
I’ve been playing for over 15 years, teaching for almost a decade, and I’ve even recorded for Universal and BBC Radio. But what really matters here isn’t my CV, it’s your child’s experience.
I know the kinds of questions parents ask before starting lessons:
“Will my child actually make progress?”
“Is this worth the time and money?”
“Will they stay motivated once the novelty wears off?”
That’s exactly why I designed the MDS Levels system.
It gives every child a clear, step-by-step path so they can see (and hear!) their progress from the very first lessons. Instead of drifting through aimless practice, they build real skills with small, achievable goals — and they get recognised and rewarded as they move forward.
Think of it like a game: your child collects points, levels up, and celebrates milestones — which keeps motivation high and practice fun.
And because I also have a background in psychology, I understand how children learn best. Lessons are designed so progress isn’t just quick, but lasting.

MDS LEVELS
MDS Levels replace box-ticking exams with 7 personalised stages that build improvisation, reading, fluidity, and musical confidence — at any age or level.
HOW IT WORKS
Step 1 – We kick things off by creating your child’s very own drummer avatar. It gets printed and proudly placed on our level chart in the teaching room — their journey starts here!
Step 2 – Time to rack up the points. Kids earn them by learning and recording songs, tackling rhythm challenges, and joining in on our drum competitions. Every beat builds their skills and moves them closer to the top… all the way to Drum Master.
Step 3 – Rewards time! Each time they level up, your child gets a shiny certificate to show off their progress (and bragging rights included).

THE DRUM CUBBY
We teach from a purpose-built drum studio, fully equipped for young learners. The space is safe, distraction-free, and designed to keep kids focused while having fun (with Rupert, our laid-back studio dog, often snoozing nearby).
With pro-level gear, we can record crisp video and audio so you can see and hear your child’s progress. It’s a set-up that keeps learning exciting for them — and reassuring for you.
