Why I Teach Drums
(And Why You’ll Love It)

Hi, I’m Alisdair — drummer, teacher, and founder of Midlands Drum School.

I’ve been playing drums for over 15 years and teaching for nearly a decade. Along the way, I’ve recorded for Universal and BBC Radio, but what matters most here is helping you enjoy drumming and make real progress.

A lot of adults ask me the same questions before starting lessons:

“Am I too old to start learning?”
“Will I actually get good enough to play songs I enjoy?”
“Can I fit this around work and family life?”

The answer to all of those is yes. With the right approach, adults can progress quickly, even if you’ve never touched a drum kit before.

That’s why I created the MDS Levels system. It’s a clear, step-by-step path that helps you see progress from the very first session. Instead of getting lost in confusing exercises, you’ll be learning real songs, building solid technique, and ticking off achievable milestones.

Think of it as structured but flexible: you set the goals, I give you the tools to reach them. Whether you want to jam with friends, join a band, or simply enjoy drumming as a way to switch off after a busy day, you’ll have a clear roadmap to get there.

And with my background in psychology, I understand the challenges adults face when learning something new — from confidence blocks to finding time to practice.

We teach from a purpose-built drum studio, fully equipped for young learners. The space is safe, distraction-free, and designed to keep kids focused while having fun (with Rupert, our laid-back studio dog, often snoozing nearby).

With pro-level gear, we can record crisp video and audio so you can see and hear your child’s progress. It’s a set-up that keeps learning exciting for them — and reassuring for you.
