Not at all. Drums are one of the most accessible instruments to pick up at any age because you don't need years of classical theory to start making music. Adult learners often progress faster than kids initially because you bring patience, focus, and a conscious appreciation for music that younger students are still developing. Whether you’re 25, 50, or 75, your brain is fully capable of building new neural pathways and rhythm skills. Not only that, drums is one of the best things you can do for your brain, it even shields against Alzheimer's.

What styles of drumming can I learn?

Anything from classic rock to headbanging metal, funk, jazz or latin styles.

Should I Be Worried About The Loudness of Drum Lessons?

Accepted Answer

Quite simply, no. We are one of the few drum schools (if only) to use a hybrid drum kit that looks and feels exactly like an acoustic but is actually volume controlled. The kit will never be loud enough to damage your hearing.

Do I need my own drum kit to start lessons?

Accepted Answer

Nope! You don’t need your own kit to get started. No rush or pressure to get one either. That being said, practice between lessons is where you'll make the most progress.

I'm an adult, what can I expect from my taster lesson?

Accepted Answer

Start with goals:First off I think it's best to have a quick chat about what your goals are for your drumming. Kick-offOnce we've established your goals, I like to get cracking with learning a basic drum groove (that repetitive pattern that loops through songs) and then a snazzy drum fill to top it off. If alls well we can try and get that going with your favourite songs.

Do I need to already have natural rhythm or musical ability to do this?

Rhythm isn't a magical innate talent—it’s a physical skill you build, just like learning to drive. Nobody expects you to sit down on day one and play a tight groove. We start with simple, steady movements and break rhythms down into bite-sized pieces. If you can tap your foot to a song on the radio, you have all the "natural rhythm" you need to begin.

Isn't it much harder to learn physical coordination as an adult?

It feels unfamiliar at first, but your body adapts quickly. Adult coordination comes down to muscle memory. We isolate movements—getting your hands working together first, then slowly introducing your feet. By taking it step-by-step in a structured way, your brain builds the habit pathways faster than you’d expect.

Will I be embarrassed or feel awkward in my first lesson?

There is zero judgment here. Learning a new instrument as an adult takes guts, and my studio is a completely safe space to make mistakes—that’s literally what lessons are for! We take things at a pace you are comfortable with, and within 10 minutes, you’ll be so focused on playing your first beat that the self-consciousness completely fades away.

Do I have to commit to the same weekly time slot, or is there flexibility for shift work/travel?

Our face-to-face, 1-1 lessons are on a fixed slot each week. The reason for this is so that students don't need to worry about switching times, and it means a lot less admin for everyone. If you're a shift worker, I'd recommend trying to find a time during the week that you know you'll always have free for drums. If a regular slot is not possible, then why not head over to our online drumming page which has much more flexibility.

I live in a flat / semi-detached house—is it even realistic for an adult to own drums?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Modern electronic drum kits and low-volume mesh acoustic setups have completely changed the game for adult learners. You can easily set up a kit in a spare room, bedroom, or corner of a flat without disturbing family or neighbours.

What basic equipment do I need to get started at home without spending a fortune?

All you need for your first few weeks is a pair of drumsticks and a practice pad (which costs around £15–£20). You don't need to buy a full kit on day one. Once you're ready to upgrade, I can guide you toward budget-friendly entry-level electronic kits or secondhand options.

Can we learn songs I actually listen to (rock, funk, metal, etc.)?

100% yes. You are learning for your own enjoyment, so we will use music you actually love—whether that’s 70s classic rock, 90s indie, modern metal, funk, or pop. Learning techniques through songs you listen to in the car makes practice infinitely more fun.
